Disk Optimization and Defragmentation

Mac Disk optimization means arranging data stored on hard drive in a manner, which enhances the performance of the Mac OS X.

Optimization removes fragmentation of a hard drive and leads to improved memory usage. Optimization places all the free space of a storage device at one place. Optimization joins all the lumps of memory space, left unused due to their smaller size, together. Because of this, the free space will be available as a large single chunk. After optimization, new files are saved in contiguous memory locations.

Disk optimization improves the performance of a storage device affected by fragmentation. Optimization also includes performing several disk management tasks on Mac hard drive. There tasks includes -
  1. Defragging
  2. Disk Cleaning
  3. Drive Repair
  4. Wiping Unused Spaces

Fragmentation is the phenomenon in which storage space is used inefficiently (files are divided into many fragments and are stored at non-contiguous memory locations) and leads to slower performance.
Fragmentation is breaking a file into multiple pieces and saving them at non-contiguous memory locations because contiguous disk space is not available. Opening a fragmented file takes a longer time because Mac OS has to locate and retrieve them from multiple locations. In addition, it takes longer time to save a new file because multiple memory spaces have to be located and the file is to be broken into parts to save it at those multiple locations.

Defragmentation, on the other hand, is the process of reducing the amount of fragmentation by physically re-organizing the contents of the storage device used to store files into the smallest number of contiguous regions (fragments). It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmentation utilities try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed sequentially.

Fragmentation and Defragmentation are mutually complimentary process.
Defragmentation is the process of reducing the fragmentation of a storage device. Defragmentation physically re-organizes the contents of a storage device. In this process, all the fragments of a file are placed at contigious memory locations, which decreases the time required for accessing and saving files, and helps in improving your Mac's performance.

Optimization removes fragmentation of a hard drive and leads to improved memory usage. Optimization places all the free space of a storage device at one place. It works by joining all the lumps of memory space, left unused due to their smaller size, together. Because of this, the free space is available as a large single chunk. After optimization, new files are saved in contiguous memory locations.

Hence, we can say that the main difference between the two concepts is that defragmentation places all the fragments of a file together while optimization places all the chunks of free space together.
Solid State Drives (SSDs) are non-volatile flash memory (like the memory in your digital cameras). SSDs wear down a bit every time they are written to. SSDs and flash memories have a finite lifespan and the more they are used, the more quickly they will fail.

Defragmenting SSDs does not result in an improvement of their performance.

Therefore, it is not advisable to defragment SSDs using Stellar Drive Defrag or any other defragmentation software.
Yes, you can defragment USB drives, memory cards, and external disk drives using Stellar Drive Defrag. In fact, you can defrag any external storage device of any make and size.

Note: For defragmenting memory cards, you have to connect them using card readers. After connecting the memory cards, use the Refresh button to reload the list of available volumes.
Stellar Drive Defrag is a defragmentation application, which simply rearranges or moves fragmented files or data, kept in your hard drive. It also optimizes the free space of your storage device.

Stellar Drive Defrag never deletes or modifies any data from your hard drive.

Stellar Drive Defrag is hence, a safe application to use.
